In the last 12 months, 84,5 million EUR have been paid in MTPL claims.
During the last 12 months (01.07.2025. – 30.06.2026.) insurance companies and the Latvian Motor Insurers' Bureau (hereinafter LTAB) have made decisions on the payment of MTPL compensation in the amount of EUR 84,5 million, which is 13,5% more than year before. Similarly, for twelve years in a row, the average MTPL compensation continues to increase.
In accordance with LTAB According to data, the average MTPL compensation currently reaches 1811 euros. “The increase in the average MTPL compensation is mainly due to inflation, as well as the increase in prices for car repair, construction, medical and rehabilitation services,” says LTAB Chairman of the Board Jānis Abāšins.
Over the past year, 39740 road traffic accidents (hereinafter – RTAs) have been reported to insurers, which is 10,1% more than in the previous period. The majority of accidents – 73,6% – were recorded with a coordinated report, while 26,4% – with a State Police report. Almost 93% of RTAs occurred in Latvia, but slightly more than 7% – abroad (mostly in Germany, Lithuania and Estonia).
"A positive trend is that the number of accidents involving uninsured vehicles is decreasing. If in 2022-2023 they accounted for 0,87% of all cases, then in the last 12 months – 0,54%. This improvement is facilitated by both the increasing number of radars on the roads and LTAB information campaigns on the importance of MTPL,” informs LTAB Chairman of the Board.
Insurance companies and LTAB In the last 12 months, a total of 84,5 million EUR in compensation for OCTA has been paid out. Insurers have mostly compensated for damage to vehicles (74,8%), injured persons (10,4%) and state and local government institutions for the treatment of RTA victims, their stay in medical institutions, as well as for benefits paid (6,4%). OCTA insurance covers not only damage to vehicles. It also compensates for expenses for the treatment and rehabilitation of injured persons, emergency medical care, hospital stay, as well as other expenses related to health restoration. In addition, state and local government expenses are also covered, such as sick leave, pensions, benefits, funeral costs, purchase or rental of technical aids, as well as damage to roads, buildings and the environment.
