Drivers aged 50-59 cause the fewest accidents without MTPL insurance.
Latvian Motor Insurers' Bureau (hereinafter – LTAB) statistics on road traffic accidents (hereinafter – RTA) caused by an uninsured car that occurred in the last 12 months (01.07.2025 – 30.06.2026) show that RTAs are most often caused by drivers in the age group from 18 to 29 years, while the least often – by drivers aged from 50 to 59 years.
The number of road traffic accidents caused by vehicles without a valid MTPL continues to decrease. Over the past 12 months, they accounted for only 0,54% of all reported MTPLs, but in 2022 this figure was 1,16%.
The compiled statistics on traffic accidents caused by uninsured vehicles show that 27,22% were caused by drivers aged 18–29. The fewest traffic accidents with uninsured vehicles were caused by drivers aged 50–59 – 9,44%. It should be noted that 2,22% of such traffic accidents were caused by persons who have not yet reached the age of 18.
LTAB Chairman of the Board Jānis Abāšins emphasizes that regardless of the age of the driver or owner of the vehicle, it should be remembered that if the accident was caused by an uninsured vehicle, the losses caused to the victims of the RTA can be measured in tens or hundreds of thousands of euros, and they will have to be covered out of pocket by recourse: “If the RTA was caused by an uninsured vehicle, the losses caused to the victims will be covered by the Guarantee Fund, but later the amount of the losses will be recovered by recourse from the person who caused the RTA – the owner or driver of the uninsured vehicle.” LTAB The collected data also shows that often traffic accidents with uninsured vehicles are caused by those drivers who deliberately and regularly violate the law, driving not only without an MTPL, but also without a valid technical inspection and also under the influence of intoxicating substances. “Although the number of uninsured vehicles in Latvia is relatively small, it is worrying that there are “recidivists” among them. Traffic accidents caused by drivers under the influence of illegal substances are most often very serious and often end with tragic consequences. Similarly, intoxicated drivers often try to flee the scene of the accident, causing additional damage to themselves and others,” emphasizes LTAB Chairman of the Board.
